Spontaneous Professional Development

Tomorrow at the NJECC monthly meeting I’m going to speak for a bit about “Spontaneous Professional Development”. With the budget cuts in NJ schools this past year, many educators don’t have funding for PD. Our meeting this month will be about how schools are dealing with the cuts, what types of PD their districts are spending money on and of course, how we can harness the power of our networks to bring in free professional development virtually.

I hope I don’t put myself right out of business.

Here’s the slides I will be sharing along with a list of the resources I will be talking about. (Please leave a comment if you have others to add as we would all benefit from your resources.)

Feel free to follow the #NJECC hashtag on Twitter during tomorrow morning’s meeting.

  1. Hi Ms. Thumann
My name is Lawanna Hinton, and I am a student at the University of South Alabama and part of my assignment is to comment on different teachers blog throughout the semester. I really enjoyed exploring your blog and found some very interesting and informative information that I think will help my with my studies. I have never heard of hashtags so I actually learned about something that I had no clue of what it was. Thanks for the much needed information and I look forward to reading more of your blog posts.

    1. See Chad, this is why I should run all my presentations by you ahead of time. I ABSOLUTELY should have included the K12 Online conference.

I will say though, that the group of educators I was presenting to said that the list was a little too much 🙂

      1. Anytime! BTW, thanks for getting my name right. 🙂

What was some of the other feedback people gave? I haven’t started putting my presentation together yet, but anything you learned would be helpful.

      2. I think if I were to present on the same topic again I would show specific examples from each of the sections. I did this for only iTunes. I think if I demonstrated just how easy it is to view an archived session, I might have encouraged a few more educators to do so.

We had internet connectivity issues that morning and I think that contributed to the overall feeling of “too much info”. But there were about 70 people, so it’s difficult to accommodate everyone’s technology ability level.

  2. Thanks for the ideas. Wow, I’d say 70 is a pretty large number. I’d be feeling a little hectic with tech trouble in front of so many people. You’re right, you can’t please everyone and accommodate their ability. I’m sure it went well, you do a great job presenting. Thanks for sharing.
