#ISTE10 Where to go, What to see, What to do

If you are attending ISTE10 next week, you have most likely been flooded with e-mails regarding events, booth #’s, Tweet-ups and every imaginable social gathering. I’ve assembled a list of some of the highlights of what I’ve received with some of my notes as I thought it might be helpful for those that have not attending ISTE before or are looking for some guidance as to how to manage their time. (I’m sure I’ve missed something. Please feel free to leave additions in the comments.)

Are you deciding where to go and what to attend?

  • Drop past the ISTE Bloggers Cafe to meet Sue Waters, The Edublogger and leave your contact details with her to WIN one of 10 twelve month Edublogs Pro subscriptions per day. (This is also a great place to meet folks from your PLN and have those more informal, yet priceless, conversations that make the trip to ISTE so worthwhile.)
  • The recently announced Global Education Conference will be at the Global Collaboration Session Sunday night from 7:00 – 8:30pm  in the Convention Center Lobby A, table #P19.
  • Visit ISTE’s Social Butterfly Lounge to learn about Twitter, FourSquare, Facebook and more. (Stop by to see me on 6/29 at 2pm)
  • Don’t forget to use your conference planner to keep your self organized (make sure to schedule a visit to booth #2419 – the yolink booth to visit me)

  • Sign up to present at ISTE Unplugged.  This is your chance.
  • Participate in the Classroom 2.0 LIVE! broadcast of their show live from the Blogger’s Cafe / ISTE Unplugged area on Wednesday from 1:30pm – 2:30pm.

Summer Reading Resources

I’m going pretty low-tech on this post with the exception on how to access all these great summer reading resources you should be aware of.

Follow the links below to let your students, parents, colleagues (even family members) know of the great reading incentive programs available for children this summer. Some offer free books, money, even just a pat on the back.

Barnes and Noble


This program is designed for students in grades 1 through 6. Read ANY 8 books, write about them in your 2010 B&N Passport to Summer Reading and bring it to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from a list of paperback titles. The program runs May 25  through September 6. Teachers, parents and children can download the Summer Reading materials for free at http://www.bn.com/summerreading.



This program is for children ages 12 and under. To participate, children must read ANY 10 books. Download and complete this form and bring it with you to a Borders or Waldenbooks store to choose your free book. They have about ten titles to choose from.



Meet the Summer Reading Challenge with these great articles from Scholastic on how to keep kids reading over the summer. Encourage readers age 7 and up to join the Read for the World Record Challenge! The Top 20 schools with the most reading minutes will appear in the “Scholastic Book of World Records” 2011 edition.

For New Jersey Readers


Organized by the NJ Library Association and the NJ State Library, these committees have gathered information on book lists, films & movies, web resources, performers, program ideas, crafts and details on upcoming workshops. Also check out their site for free prizes from McDonald’s for reading 5 books.

TD Bank


Are you aware of the 2010 TD Bank Summer Reading Program? Children who read ten books by the end of the summer will receive $10 from TD Bank to deposit into a new or existing TD Bank Young Saver Account. The Summer Reading Program takes place May 3rd – September 30th. More information is

Why Not Minot?

Google Comes to Minot

I went to a conference in Minot,

Presented by the Google group.

I was so impressed those two days,

I even felt to be in the loop!

From Google Earth to Search and more,

I left each session and with tools galore.

The leaders were all fun, energetic and bright,

And kept us enthralled, knowing our plight.

I left this workshop with both optimism and pride,

And will keep these tools with me and close to my side.


Mark Reinig – Fairmount, ND 58030

I think this poem from attendee, Mark Reinig, sums it up. Cindy Lane, Lainie Rowell and I read this on the way to the airport to catch our flights home after the two-day Google Workshop for Educators held in Minot, ND.  We then forwarded it to the other Lead Learners that had presented with us: Ken Shelton, Katie Morrow and Steve Dembo.

Apparently, the local news covered the event as well as Craig Nansen, the district technology coordinator for Minot Public Schools is currently the only Google Certified Teacher in North Dakota.

This was the largest Google Workshop for Educators that Cue has run with about 130 educators attending. Educators rotated through a total of 10 sessions including:

  • Search Part 1
  • Google Docs
  • Picasa
  • YouTube
  • Google Sites
  • Search Part 2
  • Google Maps
  • Google Earth
  • Sketchup
  • Even More

All the sessions were hands-on and the tech staff from Minot (including Brian and Alicia) kept everything running smoothly. But besides the poem, what I really wanted to share were the speed demos that we all chose to present at the conclusion of the first day. Now, I will tell you that Steve wanted to call them “Steve Dembos”, but we didn’t have time to take an official vote. These are the tools that we each had 3 minutes to demonstrate to the group:

I had a great time presenting with these GCTs and learned something from each of them. What a pleasure.

Why not Minot? Seriously, I think I may have to go back for another visit.
