Chad - That's not that long - I think most wait longer than than just a few months. But I truly do look at the blogroll to see who others are reading and to find new things to read and new perspectives.

I agree with you Paul and that's why I really like how Scott McLeod has his list of "Blogs that deserve a bigger audience". I'd love to see that updated and maybe have others make their own list.

Great post - this reminds of me something I need to do. I think the last time I updated my blog roll was over the summer when I updated my blog. It's time to do it again.

I have been trying to get off my butt and update mine for awhile. I would hope that as everyone updates, they consider putting on some of the lesser known bloggers, and some beginning bloggers. Blogrolls are becoming like main streets across America, a collection of the same exact franchises. I know the most popular blogs are popular for a reason, but it would be nice to see some different names. With everyone always being driven to the same blogs, especially ed tech blogs, I just hope that some of the quality "indie blogs" don't get forgotten and squashed.

Just checked, last time I updated mine was January 1, 2009--thanks for the reminder to update!

Jen,

I agree with you that maintaining a blog is more than just posting. It's certainly a first step for new bloggers. But for readers to use a blog as a resource, the entire domain needs to be maintained.

Thanks for your comment.

In response to your #2 --
I could not agree more.

There are MANY bloggers who have very outdated blogrolls with many links leading to old blogs, no longer used blogs, or the dreaded "this page no longer exists."

When I see that, to me it shows just name dropping and not actually the knowledge of the people being linked to and the content you are linking to.

For me -- a blog roll list carries my stamp of approval or at least an unspoken "I think the content of this blog is worth your time to check this out."

When I come upon a blogroll that is lengthy and outdated -- and then come back to again in a few months and it remains the same.....for me, that is a sign that the blogger really only cares what they write about and have created a "lookee who I link to list."

Maintenance of all areas of your blog -- not just your posts -- I feel, is part of having a blog.

Thanks for letting me share.
